Use the calculator below to find your school percentage (a weighted average of marks out of 100, the way the Kuwait Ministry of Education and most private schools report it) or your university GPA out of 4.00 (grade points × credit hours, as used by Kuwait University, PAAET, AUK, GUST and AUM). Enter each course, its mark or grade and its weight or credit hours, then press Calculate. Add your previous cumulative GPA and credit hours to get your updated cumulative GPA.

How to use the GPA and percentage calculator
- Choose the calculation type: Percentage (schools) or GPA out of 4 (university).
- For percentage mode, enter each subject’s mark out of 100 and its weight (number of weekly periods or the official weighting).
- For GPA mode, pick each course’s letter grade and enter its credit hours.
- To get a cumulative GPA, fill in your previous cumulative GPA and the total credit hours it covers.
- Press Calculate. Use Add course for more rows.
If you do not know the weights in percentage mode, give every subject the same weight (for example 1). The result is then a simple average of your marks.
How the school percentage (المعدل) is calculated in Kuwait
Ministry of Education and private Arabic schools report a percentage average. Each subject’s mark out of 100 is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. Subjects with more periods therefore count more.
Percentage = Σ(mark × weight) ÷ Σ weights
Worked example
| Subject | Mark | Weight | Mark × weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arabic | 92 | 5 | 460 |
| Mathematics | 85 | 5 | 425 |
| English | 88 | 4 | 352 |
| Science | 79 | 4 | 316 |
| Islamic education | 95 | 2 | 190 |
| Total | 20 | 1,743 |
1,743 ÷ 20 = 87.15%. A simple average of the same five marks would be 87.8%, which shows how weights change the result.
Grade 12 percentage and university admission
The Grade 12 percentage decides university admission in Kuwait. For the 2026 intake, Kuwait University announced minimums of 70% for scientific-stream graduates and 78% for literary-stream graduates, with higher requirements in some colleges. Many colleges rank applicants by an equivalent percentage (النسبة المكافئة) that combines the school percentage with KU academic aptitude test results, while some colleges such as Science and Law rank by the school percentage. Weights and cut-offs change each year, so check the official KU admission announcement for your intake.
Graduates of British, American, Indian or other foreign curricula need their certificates evaluated by the Ministry of Education equivalency office before applying to Kuwaiti universities.
The 4.0 GPA scale used at Kuwaiti universities
| Letter grade | Points | Typical percentage |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | 90–100 |
| A- | 3.67 | 87–89 |
| B+ | 3.33 | 83–86 |
| B | 3.00 | 80–82 |
| B- | 2.67 | 77–79 |
| C+ | 2.33 | 73–76 |
| C | 2.00 | 70–72 |
| C- | 1.67 | 67–69 |
| D+ | 1.33 | 63–66 |
| D | 1.00 | 60–62 |
| F | 0.00 | below 60 |
Private universities use the same 4.0 scale with small differences in the percentage bands, so check your student handbook for the exact cut-offs.
How to calculate your semester GPA
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours. Courses with more credit hours have more effect on your GPA.
| Course | Grade | Points | Credits | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | A | 4.00 | 3 | 12.00 |
| Course 2 | B+ | 3.33 | 3 | 9.99 |
| Course 3 | B | 3.00 | 4 | 12.00 |
| Course 4 | C+ | 2.33 | 2 | 4.66 |
| Total | 12 | 38.65 |
38.65 ÷ 12 = 3.22 for the semester.
How to calculate your cumulative GPA (المعدل التراكمي)
Your cumulative GPA combines all semesters, weighted by credit hours. Multiply your previous cumulative GPA by the credit hours it covers to get your previous quality points, add this semester’s points, and divide by the total credit hours.
Example: a previous cumulative GPA of 2.80 over 45 credit hours gives 126 points. Add the semester above (38.65 points, 12 credits): (126 + 38.65) ÷ (45 + 12) = 164.65 ÷ 57 = 2.89.
This is exactly what the calculator above does when you fill in the previous GPA and credit hours fields.
Converting a percentage to GPA
There is no single official conversion in Kuwait. Universities convert letter grades to points, not percentages to GPA. As a rough guide, use the table above: a course mark of 85% is usually B+ (3.33), and 75% is usually C+ (2.33). For applications abroad, follow the receiving university’s conversion rules or ask for an official transcript evaluation.
GPA thresholds that matter
| GPA | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 2.00 | Minimum cumulative GPA to stay in good standing and graduate at Kuwait University |
| 2.67 (B-) | Common threshold for scholarships and some job applications |
| 3.00 (B) | Common threshold for honours lists, many scholarships and some Civil Service Commission grades |
| 3.67 and above | Typically associated with distinction-level results; check your university’s honours rules |
Tips to raise your GPA
- Focus on high-credit courses: an A in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than an A in a 2-credit course.
- Early semesters have the biggest effect. Once you have 90+ credit hours, each new semester moves the cumulative GPA only slightly.
- Check your university’s repeat policy before retaking a course; rules on whether the new grade replaces the old one differ.
- Use the calculator to plan: enter the grades you expect this semester to see what cumulative GPA is realistic.
- Withdraw before the deadline rather than risk an F when a course is clearly going badly, if your university allows it.
Common mistakes
- Averaging GPAs from different semesters without weighting by credit hours.
- Including pass/fail or non-credit courses that your university excludes from the GPA.
- Mixing percentage marks and grade points in the same calculation.
- Typing the total credits of the degree instead of the credits you have completed.
- Rounding each course to one decimal before adding; round only the final result to two decimals.
What GPA do you need next semester?
You can work backwards from a target. Multiply your target cumulative GPA by your total credit hours after next semester, subtract the points you already have, and divide by next semester’s credit hours.
Required semester GPA = (target × total credits − current points) ÷ next semester credits
Example: you have a 2.89 cumulative GPA over 57 credit hours (164.65 points) and want to reach 3.00 after a 15-credit semester. The target needs 3.00 × 72 = 216 points, so you need 216 − 164.65 = 51.35 points from 15 credits, which is a semester GPA of about 3.42. If the answer comes out above 4.00, the target cannot be reached in one semester; spread it over two or three.
Run your planned grades through the calculator above before registering for courses. It shows quickly whether a heavy semester with many credit hours helps or hurts your target.
Grading systems in Kuwait’s schools
Kuwait has several school systems side by side, and each reports results differently. Use the right mode of the calculator for each.
| System | How results are reported | Calculator mode |
|---|---|---|
| MOE public and private Arabic schools | Percentage out of 100 per subject and an overall percentage | Percentage |
| American curriculum schools | Letter grades and a GPA, often on a 4.0 scale; some schools weight honours or AP courses | GPA (unweighted) |
| British curriculum schools | IGCSE and A-level letter grades rather than an overall average | Not directly; schools and universities convert grades |
| Indian CBSE schools | Marks and percentages per subject, with grades | Percentage |
| Universities (KU, PAAET, private) | Letter grades and GPA out of 4.00 | GPA |
When you apply to a Kuwaiti university with a foreign certificate, the Ministry of Education equivalency office converts it, so the figure you calculate here is only a guide until you have the official evaluation.
