The box below shows today’s Hijri date in Kuwait, calculated with the Umm al-Qura calendar used across the Gulf, and converts any date between Gregorian and Hijri in both directions. The current Islamic year is 1448 AH, which began on 16 June 2026; in late October 2026 the month is Jumada al-Ula 1448. Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027 and the new year 1449 on 6 June 2027. Official religious dates in Kuwait are confirmed by moon sighting, so they can differ from the calculated date by a day.

How to use the Hijri date converter
- The top line of the tool shows today's Hijri date in Kuwait time (GMT+3), together with the Gregorian date and the day of the week.
- To convert a Gregorian date to Hijri, pick the date in the Gregorian box; the Hijri equivalent appears immediately.
- To convert a Hijri date to Gregorian, enter the Hijri day, month and year; the tool returns the matching Gregorian date.
- Copy the result into your form, or use it to plan around Ramadan, the two Eids and other Islamic holidays.
The converter runs in your browser and uses the Umm al-Qura calculation, which is the standard calculated Hijri calendar in Saudi Arabia and is widely used for planning in Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf. For a date of birth or any date in the past it gives the accepted equivalent; for religious occasions in the future, treat the result as the expected date until Kuwait's moon-sighting announcement.
What Hijri year is it now?
It is 1448 AH (anno Hegirae, the years since the Prophet's migration from Makkah to Madinah). The year 1448 began on Tuesday 16 June 2026 and is expected to end on 5 June 2027, with 1 Muharram 1449 on Sunday 6 June 2027. Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, two Hijri new years fall in some Gregorian years, and every Gregorian year contains parts of two Hijri years: 2026 contains the end of 1447 and the start of 1448.

Why the Hijri date in Kuwait can differ by a day
The Islamic calendar is lunar: each month begins when the new crescent moon is sighted after sunset, so a month has 29 or 30 days and the year is about 354 or 355 days. Calculated calendars such as Umm al-Qura predict the start of each month from astronomical data, but Kuwait's official dates for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are announced by the moon-sighting committee under the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs after the crescent is looked for on the 29th of the previous month.
- If the crescent is seen on the evening of the 29th, the new month starts the next day.
- If it is not seen, the current month completes 30 days.
- Weather, dust and the moon's position all affect sighting, which is why a one-day difference from the calculated calendar is possible.
- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the other GCC countries usually start Ramadan and Eid on the same day, but each country makes its own announcement.
Hijri new year dates for the coming years
| Hijri year | 1 Muharram (expected) | Ramadan begins (Umm al-Qura) |
|---|---|---|
| 1447 | 26 June 2025 | 18 February 2026 |
| 1448 | 16 June 2026 | 8 February 2027 |
| 1449 | 6 June 2027 | 28 January 2028 |
| 1450 | 25 May 2028 | – |
Each Islamic date moves about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year, so Ramadan works its way through all four seasons over roughly 33 years. In 2027 and 2028 it falls in Kuwait's mild winter months, with fasting days of about 12–13 hours.
How to write the Hijri date on Kuwaiti forms
Most government forms and e-services in Kuwait, including PACI and the Sahel app, use the Gregorian date. Court documents, marriage contracts and some Ministry of Justice and Awqaf papers also show the Hijri date. Write it as day / month / year followed by "هـ" (AH), for example 10 / 5 / 1448 هـ.
The most common mistake is the year: both 1447 and 1448 fall in 2026, and both 1448 and 1449 fall in 2027. Always convert the full date with the tool above rather than guessing the year.
The Hijri calendar in daily life in Kuwait
- Work and school follow the Gregorian calendar; salaries, rent, school terms and visas are all in Gregorian dates.
- Public holidays for Islamic occasions move each year with the Hijri calendar, which is why Eid and Ramadan dates change.
- Ramadan brings shorter working hours in government and many private companies, and Maghrib becomes iftar time; see our Ramadan imsakiya.
- Traditional calendars such as the Al-Ojairi calendar, found in many Kuwaiti homes, show both Hijri and Gregorian dates together with prayer times and seasons.
- Prayer times follow the sun, not the Hijri date; see prayer times in Kuwait.
Converting Hijri and Gregorian dates by hand
For a rough conversion without the tool, multiply the number of Hijri years by 0.97 and add 622 to get the Gregorian year: 1448 × 0.97 + 622 ≈ 2026.6, so 1448 AH falls mainly in 2026–2027. The reverse is (Gregorian year − 622) ÷ 0.97: (2027 − 622) ÷ 0.97 ≈ 1448. These shortcuts are good for the year only; for an exact day always use the converter.
