The live gold price in Kuwait below is updated every few minutes from the international spot price and converted to Kuwaiti dinars. 21K is the karat most Kuwaitis buy, 22K is preferred by many Indian and Pakistani residents, and 24K is used for bullion. Shop prices are slightly higher than spot because they add a dealer premium and a making charge per gram.

How the gold price in Kuwait is calculated
Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). To get the Kuwaiti price per gram, dealers and our widget use one simple formula:
Price per gram (KD) = Spot price (USD/oz) ÷ 31.1035 × USD→KWD rate × purity. For 21K the purity is 0.875, for 22K 0.916, for 18K 0.75 and for 24K 0.999.
Because the dinar is pegged to a basket of currencies dominated by the US dollar, the dinar price of gold follows the international market very closely. Big moves in Kuwait usually come from changes in the global spot price, not from the exchange rate. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) also publishes an official daily gold price list for the local market, which shops use as a reference.
Gold karats sold in Kuwait
| Karat | Purity | Typical use in Kuwait | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | Bullion bars, coins, investment | Softest; rarely used for daily jewellery |
| 22K | 91.6% | Indian-style jewellery, bangles, chains | Popular with South Asian buyers |
| 21K | 87.5% | Gulf/Kuwaiti jewellery, gold lira coins | The most traded karat in Kuwait |
| 18K | 75.0% | Diamond and gemstone settings, Italian designs | Harder, holds stones securely |
21 karat gold price in Kuwait
21K is the standard for Gulf jewellery and the karat most Kuwaiti families buy for weddings and gifts. It balances purity and strength, keeps a deep yellow colour and is easy to resell in any souq. Gold lira coins (8 g) sold in Kuwait are usually 21K or 22K – check the stamp.
22 karat gold price in Kuwait
22K is the most common karat in Indian-style jewellery, so jewellers in Fahaheel, Salmiya, Farwaniya and Mubarakiya stock a large range of 22K bangles, chains and necklaces. If you plan to take jewellery to India, 22K is also the easiest to resell there.
24 karat gold price in Kuwait
24K (999.9) is investment gold: bars from 1 gram up to 1 kilogram and coins. Buyers pay a small premium over spot for bars, and this premium falls per gram as the bar gets larger. Banks and licensed bullion dealers sell 24K bars with certificates.
18 karat gold price in Kuwait
18K is used mainly for diamond rings and designer pieces. It is cheaper per gram but the design and stones make up most of the price, so resale value is lower than plain 21K or 22K gold.
Making charges and how to read a gold invoice
The price you pay in a shop has three parts: the gold value (weight × price per gram for that karat), the making charge (mashghool/مصنعية), and any stones. Making charges in Kuwait are usually quoted per gram and vary widely – simple chains and bangles can be well under KD 1 per gram, while handmade or branded designs can cost several dinars per gram. Always ask for the charge per gram before you agree.
- Check the karat stamp (21, 22, 875, 916, 750) and the MOCI hallmark on the piece.
- Ask the shop to weigh the item in front of you and write the exact weight on the invoice.
- Confirm the price per gram for that karat and compare it with the live price above.
- Ask for the making charge per gram and the price of any stones separately.
- Make sure the invoice shows weight, karat, gold value, making charge and total – you need it to resell or exchange.
Use the calculator above: enter the weight, choose the karat and add the making charge per gram to see what a fair total looks like before you pay.

Selling or exchanging old gold
Most jewellers in Kuwait buy back gold at a price slightly below the day's rate, and they do not pay for the making charge you originally paid. Exchanging old gold for new pieces in the same shop usually gets a better rate than selling for cash. Keep your original invoices – shops may ask for them and for your Civil ID when you sell.
Taking gold from Kuwait to India, Pakistan or other countries
Kuwait does not tax gold you take out, but you must declare cash, gold and other valuables worth more than KD 3,000 to Kuwaiti customs when travelling. Your destination country has its own rules:
- India: passengers who have lived abroad for more than one year can bring jewellery duty-free up to 20 g (value limit ₹50,000) for men and 40 g (value limit ₹1,00,000) for women; above that, customs duty applies.
- Pakistan, Egypt, the Philippines and others: allowances change often – check the customs website of your country before you fly.
- Carry your Kuwaiti invoices so customs can see the weight, karat and value.
Gold lira, bars and coins in Kuwait
Many Kuwaiti families save in gold lira coins rather than jewellery because the making charge is low and they are easy to sell. A full lira weighs about 8 grams, a half lira about 4 grams and a quarter lira about 2 grams. Bars are sold in 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 gram sizes as well as 10 tola, 1 ounce and 1 kilogram. When buying bullion:
- Buy from a bank or a licensed dealer and keep the certificate and invoice.
- Compare the premium over spot per gram – smaller bars carry a higher premium.
- Keep bars sealed in their original packaging; damaged packaging can lower resale value.
- Ask about the buy-back price before you buy, so you know the spread.
Gold buying tips for expats in Kuwait
- Buy on weekdays: shops are less crowded than on Friday evenings and more willing to negotiate the making charge.
- Compare at least three shops in the same souq – making charges vary more than the gold price.
- Pay by K-Net or card for an electronic record of the purchase.
- Do not buy unstamped gold or gold sold well below the live price.
- Ramadan, Eid and wedding season push demand up; prices per gram do not change, but discounts on making charges may be smaller.
What moves the gold price?
- US interest-rate expectations and the strength of the US dollar.
- Geopolitical tension and demand for safe-haven assets.
- Central-bank buying and investment demand through gold funds.
- Seasonal demand in India, China and the Gulf around weddings and festivals.
Gold can move several percent in a week, so if you are buying a large amount, watch the live price above for a few days and avoid buying during sharp spikes. This page is for information only and is not investment advice.
