KWD to USD Rate Today (Live Converter & Updates Now)

Quick answer

In late October 2026, 1 Kuwaiti dinar is worth about 3.22 US dollars and 1 US dollar is about 0.310 KD (310 fils). The dinar is the highest-valued currency in the world and moves only a few fils a year against the dollar, because the Central Bank of Kuwait pegs it to an undisclosed basket of currencies dominated by the US dollar. The tables below convert common amounts at that reference rate; your bank or exchange house will add its own margin.

KWD to USD conversion table

Use these ready figures for salary offers, online shopping and remittance planning. They use the reference rate of 1 KWD = 3.22 USD seen in the week to 22 October 2026, when the market moved between about 3.21 and 3.23. Because the rate barely changes, the figures stay accurate to within about 1% for months.

5 KD$16.10
10 KD$32.20
20 KD$64.40
50 KD$161.00

500 KD$1,610.00
1,000 KD$3,220.00
5,000 KD$16,100.00

A KD 1,000 monthly salary is therefore worth roughly $3,200, and a KD 120 allowance about $386. Kuwait has no personal income tax, so these are take-home figures.

Going the other way, divide the dollar amount by about 3.22, or multiply it by 0.310. These are the amounts most people search for when paying a US website, a subscription or a visa fee in dollars.

For example, 150 dollars is about KD 46.6, 500 dollars about KD 155 and 1,000 dollars about KD 311. Card payments are converted at the card network rate on the day the transaction settles, plus any foreign-transaction fee your bank charges.

Why the Kuwaiti dinar is so strong and stable

  • Basket peg: since May 2007 the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) has pegged the dinar to a weighted basket of the currencies of Kuwait’s main trade and financial partners. The weights are not published, but the US dollar is by far the largest part, so KWD/USD moves in a very narrow band.
  • Oil revenue and reserves: oil exports are priced in dollars, and the large reserves held by the Kuwait Investment Authority back the currency.
  • Small money supply: the dinar was introduced at a high value in 1961 and has never been redenominated, which is why one dinar is worth more than three dollars.
  • Result: the dollar–dinar rate changes by only a few fils over a year, unlike floating currencies such as the Indian rupee, the Egyptian pound or the Philippine peso.

Prices in Kuwait are often written with three decimals, such as KD 2.750, meaning 2 dinars and 750 fils. When you convert to dollars, keep all three decimals – rounding a 0.750 to 0.75 is fine, but reading KD 2.750 as 2,750 is a common mistake for new arrivals.

A short history of the dinar–dollar rate

The Kuwaiti dinar replaced the Gulf rupee in 1961. For most of its life it has been managed against a basket of currencies. From January 2003 Kuwait pegged the dinar to the US dollar alone, as part of plans for a common Gulf currency, but in May 2007 the Central Bank returned to a basket because a weak dollar was pushing up import prices. Since then the dollar rate has stayed in a narrow band of roughly 0.26 to 0.31 KD per dollar, which is why salary and rent figures quoted a few years ago are still meaningful in dollar terms.

For residents this stability matters in two ways. Savings and salaries keep their value against the dollar, and anyone paying loans, school fees or rent abroad in dollars can budget months ahead without worrying about sudden swings. The currencies that do move a lot are those of the home countries – which is why the timing of a remittance to India, Egypt or the Philippines matters far more than the timing of a dollar purchase.

KWD against other Gulf currencies

All other GCC currencies are fixed to the US dollar, so their rate against the dinar follows the same small movements as KWD/USD. At 1 KD = 3.22 USD:

CurrencyPeg to USDValue of 1 KD (approx.)
Saudi riyal3.75 per USD (fixed)12.075
UAE dirham3.6725 per USD (fixed)11.825
Qatari riyal3.64 per USD (fixed)11.721
Bahraini dinar0.376 per USD (fixed)1.211
Omani rial0.3845 per USD (fixed)1.238

This is handy for trips by road to Saudi Arabia or for flights through Dubai and Doha: 1 KD buys about 12 Saudi riyals or almost 12 UAE dirhams.

Where to get the best dollar rate in Kuwait

  • Exchange companies such as Al Mulla, UAE Exchange, Al Muzaini, Bahrain Exchange, Aman and Al Nada usually give rates closer to the market than banks – compare them in our guide to exchange companies in Kuwait.
  • Banks suit large transfers and dollar accounts, but their spread is usually wider; ask for the rate before you confirm.
  • Kuwaiti cards abroad: card purchases in dollars use the network rate plus a foreign-transaction fee of roughly 1–3%, depending on the bank and card.
  • Airport counters generally offer the weakest rates. Change money in the city before you travel.

When sending money, compare the final amount the recipient gets, not only the headline rate. A slightly better rate can be wiped out by a fixed transfer fee on small amounts.

Converting a salary offer in dollars or dinars

Many job offers for Kuwait are discussed in dollars abroad but paid in dinars locally. Check which currency the contract and the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) work permit state – the PAM-registered salary in dinars is the one that counts for family visas, loans and disputes. A few points to compare:

  • Basic salary versus allowances: housing, transport and food allowances are often paid separately.
  • End-of-service indemnity is calculated on the dinar salary – see the indemnity rules.
  • Living costs: rent is the largest expense; see apartment rents in Kuwait.
  • Remittance costs to your home country, which are lower through bank apps and exchange houses.

Dollar accounts and cards in Kuwait

Most Kuwaiti banks let residents open a US dollar account alongside the dinar account. It can be useful if you are paid partly in dollars, pay school fees or loans abroad in dollars, or travel often. Ask about the minimum balance and fees, and remember that converting between your dinar and dollar accounts still uses the bank’s buy and sell rates. Common mistakes when converting KWD and USD

  • Multiplying instead of dividing: KD to USD is multiply by about 3.22; USD to KD is divide by about 3.22.
  • Reading three-decimal prices (KD 1.500) as thousands.
  • Comparing a bank “sell” rate with an exchange house “buy” rate.
  • Forgetting card foreign-transaction fees when shopping on US websites.
  • Assuming the rate will change much before a trip – it rarely moves more than a percent.

Official sources

The Central Bank of Kuwait publishes official exchange rates on cbk.gov.kw. Banks and exchange companies set their own buy and sell rates around those levels during the day. This page is for information only and is not financial advice.
