An expat can open a bank account in Kuwait with a valid Civil ID, a passport and – for a salary account – a salary certificate from the employer. Salary accounts have no minimum balance, but each bank sets a minimum salary (NBK KD 400, most others KD 200–400). Basic savings accounts without a salary need only a small opening deposit (from KD 10). Most banks now open accounts in their apps with a Civil ID scan or Kuwait Mobile ID and a selfie, and the account is usually active the same day.

Documents you need to open a bank account
- Original Civil ID with valid residency. New arrivals can sometimes open with the residency stamp and PACI receipt while the card is being printed – ask the branch.
- Passport with the residency.
- Salary certificate or employment letter addressed to the bank, showing your salary and start date (for salary accounts, cards and loans).
- Kuwaiti mobile number in your name for OTPs and app registration.
- FATCA/CRS self-certification – mandatory for everyone; you declare your tax residency and, if relevant, your home-country tax ID.
- Some banks also ask for proof of address in your home country or a Kuwaiti address (lease or PACI address).
A visit visa is not enough. Kuwaiti banks require a residency (Civil ID) to open a personal account.

How to open a bank account in Kuwait – step by step
- Pick a bank – ideally the one your employer’s payroll already uses. Same-bank salary credits arrive earlier and loans are easier.
- Apply in the app or at a branch. In the app: scan the Civil ID (or log in with Kuwait Mobile ID), take a selfie, fill in employment details and sign electronically. At a branch: bring the documents above; branches open roughly 8:30 AM–3:00 PM Sunday–Thursday, and many mall branches open in the evening.
- Receive your IBAN. Download the IBAN certificate from the app and give it to your HR department.
- Activate your K-Net debit card – delivered or collected within about a week – and set your PIN.
- Set up digital banking: the mobile app, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, and WAMD instant transfers by mobile number.
Ask HR which bank they use for the Wage Protection System. Private-sector salaries in Kuwait must be paid into a Kuwaiti bank account, so the account should be ready before your first payday.
Opening an account in the app (digital onboarding)
Most Kuwaiti banks – including NBK, KFH, Boubyan, Warba, CBK and Gulf Bank – let residents open an account without visiting a branch. The bank verifies your identity through PACI data or Kuwait Mobile ID, compares your selfie with the Civil ID photo, and opens the account in minutes. If anything does not match (for example, a recently renewed residency not yet updated), the app will ask you to visit a branch. Digital onboarding is fastest for basic accounts; salary accounts may still need the salary certificate uploaded and checked.
Fees, cards and everyday banking
- K-Net is Kuwait’s national debit network. Almost every shop, government website, co-op and delivery app accepts it, and many government payments – Civil ID, traffic fines, MEW bills – work only with a Kuwaiti debit card.
- WAMD lets you send money instantly to another Kuwaiti bank account using the recipient’s mobile number.
- Credit cards usually need a minimum salary and a few months of salary credits; annual fees vary by card tier.
- Minimum balance charges can apply to non-salary accounts that drop below the required balance.
- Kuwait has no personal income tax and no VAT, but banks still collect FATCA/CRS declarations for your home country.
Sending money home from your Kuwait account
Most banks have built-in remittance services in their apps that send money to India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries, often with low or zero fees for salary customers. Compare the exchange rate as well as the fee – the rate makes the bigger difference on large transfers. Licensed exchange companies are a common alternative and are often open in the evenings; see exchange companies in Kuwait and today’s KWD to INR rate.
Loans, credit history and Ci-Net
After a few months of salary transfers you can apply for credit cards and consumer finance. Lending is regulated by the Central Bank of Kuwait, which limits how much of your salary can go to monthly repayments; each bank applies its own expat criteria such as salary, employer and length of service. All loans and cards are reported to Ci-Net, Kuwait’s credit bureau. Missed payments stay on your record and can block future credit.
Unpaid loans or credit-card debts can lead to a court case and a travel ban. Settle and close all credit before you leave Kuwait for good.
How to choose the right bank
- Payroll bank: if your employer pays through one bank, opening there means earlier salary credits and simpler loan approval.
- Branches and ATMs near you: check the nearest branch to your home and office – useful for cash deposits and card problems.
- Remittance costs: compare the rate and fee for your home country inside each bank’s app.
- Islamic or conventional: choose according to your preference; services and apps are similar.
- App quality: a good app saves branch visits for IBAN letters, card blocking and statements.
Common reasons an application is refused
- Residency expires within a few months – renew first.
- Salary below the bank’s minimum for that account type.
- Employer not on the bank’s approved list for salary accounts.
- Mobile number registered in someone else’s name.
- Missing or incorrect FATCA/CRS form.
- Previous unpaid debts recorded in Ci-Net.
Closing your account before final exit
Before you leave Kuwait permanently, settle all loans and credit cards, request a clearance letter, transfer your balance home and close the account in person or through the app. Your end-of-service indemnity is usually paid into the same salary account, so keep it open until the final settlement arrives. Accounts that are left inactive for a year become dormant and may be charged fees. See the indemnity calculator to estimate what you should receive.
