Numbers come from the hospitals’ own websites and insurers’ network directories. Hospitals do change switchboards, so if a number does not answer, the hospital’s Google Maps listing or website will show the current one. Call ahead to confirm that the ER or the specialist you need is available, especially at night and on Fridays.

Private hospitals by area and governorate

Traffic in Kuwait makes distance matter more than reputation for routine visits. Most expats choose the nearest good hospital for everyday care and travel further only for a specific doctor or for maternity.

Profiles of the most searched hospitals

Dar Al Shifa Hospital, Hawally

Dar Al Shifa opened in 1961 and is the oldest private hospital in Kuwait. It sits on Beirut Street in Hawally and covers more than 45 specialties, with separate 24-hour emergency rooms for adults and children. Its hotline is 1802555. It is a common first choice for general surgery, internal medicine and paediatrics, and it is in the networks of most local insurers. Parking around Beirut Street is tight at peak hours, so allow extra time.

Al Salam International Hospital, Bneid Al Gar

Al Salam International (1830003) is in Bneid Al Gar near the Gulf Road, with satellite clinics in Messila and Mahboula. It is known for obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery, paediatrics and intensive care, and it is convenient for residents of Kuwait City, Sharq and Dasman.

Al Seef Hospital, Ras Salmiya

Al Seef (1881122) is a full hospital in Ras Salmiya with a 24-hour ER, a large maternity and paediatric department and Accreditation Canada certification. Many families in Salmiya and Shaab use it for delivery and children’s care.

Royale Hayat and New Mowasat

Royale Hayat in Jabriya (25360000, ER 25360499) is the best-known name for maternity, neonatal intensive care and women’s health. New Mowasat in Salmiya (1826666) covers almost every specialty and runs a 24-hour ER and pharmacy, which makes it a practical option for late-night visits in the Salmiya area.

Al Orf Hospital, Jahra

Al Orf (24555050) is the main private hospital in Jahra governorate, so residents of Jahra, Saad Al Abdullah, Qasr and Naseem can avoid the drive into the city. For serious emergencies in the area, Jahra government hospital is also close by.

Metro Medical Salmiya, Shifa Al Jazeera and other medical centres

Metro Medical (22022020, also on WhatsApp) and Shifa Al Jazeera are among the most searched healthcare names in Kuwait, but they are outpatient medical centres, not full hospitals. Metro’s best-known branch is New Metro Medical Care on Easa Al Qatami Street in Salmiya, with further centres in Khaitan, Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Farwaniya, Fahaheel and Mahboula. Shifa Al Jazeera runs medical centres in Farwaniya and Fahaheel. Both groups are popular with Indian, Filipino and other expat families because consultation fees are lower than in full hospitals and clinics stay open into the late evening.

  • Use a medical centre for GP visits, check-ups, dental care, women’s health, lab tests and minor procedures.
  • Use a full hospital for admission, surgery, deliveries, ICU care and serious emergencies.
  • Other polyclinic groups such as Al Hashemi, Badr Al Samaa and Aster charge roughly KD 5–15 per visit.
  • Al Razi Hospital, often searched alongside private hospitals, is a Ministry of Health orthopaedic hospital, not a private one; you reach it through MOH referral or its emergency service.
  • Searches for “Sidra” sometimes mix up a private hospital in Kuwait with Sidra Medicine in Qatar; check the address on Google Maps before you go.

Consultation fees and typical costs

Private healthcare in Kuwait is priced per service. The figures below are typical cash prices; your own bill depends on the doctor’s grade and the tests ordered. Kuwait has no VAT, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

ServiceTypical price (cash)
GP consultation at a hospitalKD 15–25
Specialist consultationKD 25–40
Senior consultantUp to about KD 50
Visit at a medical centre or polyclinicKD 5–15
Normal delivery packageKD 600–1,200
Lab tests, X-rays, scans, medicinesCharged separately

Ask for the consultation fee when you book and ask the doctor to explain which tests are essential. Bills grow quickly when a long list of tests is added by default.

Using health insurance at a private hospital

All the hospitals above are in the direct-billing networks of the main Kuwaiti insurers, including Gulf Insurance Group (GIG), Warba, Al Ahleia, First Takaful and Kuwait Insurance. With direct billing you pay only your co-payment, usually 10–20%.

  1. Check your policy’s network list in the insurer’s app – some plans exclude certain hospitals or departments.
  2. Bring your insurance card and Civil ID to reception; the hospital checks your cover before the consultation.
  3. For scans, surgery or admission the hospital requests pre-approval from the insurer; this can take from a few minutes to a day.
  4. Pay the co-payment and keep the invoice and medical report in case of a claim dispute.
  5. If you pay cash for something not covered, ask for an itemised invoice to submit for reimbursement.

Employer insurance usually covers the employee only. Spouses and children need their own policy or must pay cash. Private insurance does not replace the mandatory MOH health fee paid at residency renewal.

Private or government hospital? What expats should know

Government (MOH) hospitalsPrivate hospitals
Who paysCovered by the KD 100 yearly MOH fee plus small visit chargesCash or private insurance
Waiting timeLonger for non-urgent clinics; booking through Meta or MOH e-servicesShort; same-day appointments are common
EmergenciesBest for major trauma and critical care; ER fee KD 5 for residentsGood for most urgent problems
Choice of doctorAssigned by the clinicYou choose the doctor

Many families combine both: they use the local MOH health centre for routine care and vaccinations, and a private hospital for maternity, quick specialist visits or when they need a particular doctor.

Dhaman hospitals: status in 2026

Dhaman (Health Assurance Hospitals Company) built two hospitals in Ahmadi (about 330 beds) and Jahra (about 300 beds) and primary-care centres in Hawally, Farwaniya, Dhajeej, Jahra and Fahaheel to take over healthcare for private-sector expats. As of October 2026 the scheme has still not launched for expats; the government moved its stake to the Kuwait Investment Authority in April 2026 to restart the project. Until it starts, expats use MOH hospitals (with the KD 100 yearly fee, in force since December 2025) or the private hospitals listed here.

In an emergency

  • Call 112 for an ambulance, police or fire service.
  • For heart attack, stroke or serious injury, go to the nearest government hospital ER, which is best equipped for critical cases.
  • Bring your Civil ID, insurance card and a list of your medicines; children need their own Civil ID or passport.
  • Outpatient centres such as Metro Medical and International Clinic do not have full ERs; after about 10 PM use a 24-hour hospital.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going to a hospital outside your insurance network and then paying the full bill.
  • Assuming a medical centre can admit you – it will refer you elsewhere, wasting time.
  • Not asking about package inclusions for a delivery; NICU days and paediatrician fees are often extra.
  • Forgetting to collect the medical report and invoices you may need for an employer, insurer or a later visa medical.
