Sunrise and sunset through the seasons
| Season | Typical sunrise | Typical sunset | What it means for daily life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 6:10–6:45 AM | 4:52–5:45 PM | Dark school runs in January; short evenings, ideal for desert camps and barbecues |
| Spring (Mar–May) | 4:50–6:15 AM | 5:45–6:45 PM | Days lengthen by about a minute each day; pleasant evenings until the heat arrives in May |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 4:47–5:25 AM | 6:10–6:50 PM | Very early dawns; most outdoor activity before 9 AM and after sunset |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 5:25–6:25 AM | 4:52–6:10 PM | Sunsets come earlier quickly in October and November |
The fastest change happens around the equinoxes in March and September, when sunset moves by about a minute a day. Around the solstices in June and December the times barely move for a couple of weeks.
Planning desert trips, camping and fishing
- Desert trips and camps: set up camp at least an hour before sunset. Darkness falls quickly in the open desert, and tracks are hard to read after twilight.
- Fishing and boat trips: many anglers leave the marina before first light, which in summer can mean leaving around 3 AM.
- Running and cycling: in summer, plan to finish within an hour or two of sunrise; in winter the hour before sunset is usually the most comfortable time.
- Travel: if you are driving to Saudi Arabia or another GCC country, remember they may be in a different time zone or use different prayer calculation methods.
Longest and shortest days in Kuwait
Kuwait lies at about 29° north. That is far enough from the equator for the length of the day to change by almost four hours through the year:
- Longest day: around 21 June, with about 14 hours of daylight. Sunrise is before 4:50 AM and sunset close to 6:50 PM.
- Shortest day: around 21 December, with about 10 hours 15 minutes of daylight.
- Earliest sunset: in early December, about 4:52 PM – a few days before the shortest day.
- Latest sunrise: in January, about 6:45 AM – a few weeks after the shortest day.
- Equal day and night: around the March and September equinoxes, when sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart.
The earliest sunset and the latest sunrise do not fall on the shortest day because of the way the Earth's orbit shifts solar noon through the year. That is why December evenings feel darkest while January mornings stay dark longest.
Why Kuwait mornings are so early in summer
Kuwait keeps GMT+3 all year and has no daylight saving time. In other countries clocks move forward in summer, shifting sunrise later; in Kuwait they do not, so from late May to mid-July the sun rises before 5 AM and first light comes a little after 3 AM. Many residents use the cooler early morning for walks, sport and errands before the heat builds up.
Sunset, Maghrib and iftar
The Maghrib prayer begins at sunset, and in Ramadan sunset is also the time to break the fast. Some apps add one to three minutes as a precaution, so you may see small differences between apps and the mosque adhan. For all five prayers and today's times, see our prayer times in Kuwait page, and for Ramadan timings the Ramadan imsakiya.
Differences between areas of Kuwait
| Area | Compared with Kuwait City |
|---|---|
| Jahra and Abdali (west and north) | About 1–2 minutes later |
| Salmiya, Hawally, Farwaniya | Practically the same |
| Fahaheel, Ahmadi, Mangaf | About a minute earlier or the same |
| Wafra and Nuwaiseeb (south) | About a minute different |
| Failaka Island (east) | About a minute earlier |
Kuwait is small, so the difference between any two inhabited areas is only a minute or two. Times are calculated for sea level; on an open beach or in the flat desert you may see the sun a moment earlier or later than in a street lined with tall buildings.
How sunrise and sunset times are calculated
- Sunrise is the moment the upper edge of the sun appears on the horizon; sunset is when the upper edge disappears.
- Calculations allow for the bending of light by the atmosphere, which makes the sun visible slightly before it is geometrically above the horizon.
- The live box uses the coordinates of Kuwait City and the Asia/Kuwait time zone; dust and haze do not change the time, only how bright the sun looks.
- Day length is the time between sunrise and sunset; twilight before sunrise and after sunset adds roughly another 20–25 minutes of usable light.
Golden hour and the best sunset spots
Golden hour in Kuwait is roughly the 45 minutes after sunrise and before sunset, when light is soft and warm. In winter the sun sets around 5 PM, which suits people who finish work in the afternoon.
- Kuwait Towers and the Arabian Gulf Street corniche.
- Marina Beach walkway in Salmiya.
- Al Shaheed Park in the city centre.
- Jahra Nature Reserve and the open desert towards Kabd, for wide horizons.
- Al Khiran and Bnaider beaches in the south, popular at weekends (Friday and Saturday).
On dusty or hazy days the sun often turns deep orange well before sunset. Check the Kuwait weather page for dust warnings before driving to the desert.
Sunrise, heat and outdoor work
Kuwait applies a midday outdoor work ban in summer, and many companies schedule outdoor shifts early in the morning. Knowing sunrise helps plan safe hours: in June and July outdoor work, exercise and deliveries are easiest between first light and about 9 AM, and again after sunset. In winter, early mornings can be cool and foggy, especially near the coast, so drive carefully around sunrise.
Driving at sunrise and sunset
- Low sun on east–west roads such as the ring roads can blind drivers for 20–30 minutes after sunrise and before sunset; keep sunglasses in the car.
- Switch on headlights at sunset, not when it is fully dark – other drivers need to see you in the dusk.
- In fog season (mainly winter), visibility is worst around dawn; reduce speed and keep your distance.
